Monument to Volodymyr Vernadsky

The monument to Volodymyr Vernadskyi is a monument in the city of Kremenchuk (Poltava region, Ukraine) dedicated to the Ukrainian and Soviet scientist, the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Volodymyr Ivanovich Vernadskyi. The opening of the monument took place before the City Day at the end of September 2005. The authors were the Poltava sculptor Mykola Mykolayovych Tsis and the Kremenchug architect V. A. Matsan.

History

Vernadsky began his scientific activity near Kremenchuk. As part of the expedition of another scientist, Vasyl Dokuchaev, he explored the soils of Kremenchug and Poltava counties in his youth. At the same time, he put data on the map not only about soil samples, but also about ancient mounds. Later, Volodymyr Vernadskyi handed this map along with several stone figures to the Poltava museum.

The sketch of the monument was created by students of the Poltava Technical University named after Yuriy Kondratyuk. The bust was made of polymer materials and placed on a granite pedestal approximately three meters high. Initially, it was planned to install his bust along the avenue of Jubilee Park in the area of the fifth building of KrNU named after Ostrohradsky from the market side, then from the central entrance to the university. However, the final decision was to install in Oleg Babaev Square across from the war veterans hospital, facing the street. The opening of the monument took place before the City Day at the end of September 2005. The authors were the Poltava sculptor Mykola Mykolayovych Tsis and the Kremenchug architect V. A. Matsan. Previously, a memorial plaque dedicated to Volodymyr Ivanovich Vernadskyi and Vasyl Vasiliovych Dokuchaev, who stayed there in 1890 during an expedition, was installed on the building of the former Victoria Hotel.

Since 2010, the monument-bust of academician V. I. Vernadsky has the status of a monument of local monumental art.
